The Quality of Advice Review (QAR) final report has emerged as a frontrunner for industry discourse and discussion, so it may be no surprise that the biggest podcasts of 2023 are all centred on the QAR.

As we close off another year, revisit the episodes that piqued your interest and see what leading voices in advice had to say on the matter.

5. Why this adviser believes Levy has done a ‘fantastic job’

In this episode of the ifa Show, Ben Neilson, adviser and researcher at Neilson & Co Wealth Management, touched on the potential expansion of the scope of personal advice, and explained why he feels allowing superannuation funds back into advice isn’t a bad thing.

Following the government’s release of the final QAR report, Mr Neilson explained why he thinks Michelle Levy has done a “fantastic job” by taking an incredibly complicated piece of “building-block based legislation” and turning it into a coherent report.

In March, Ardentura Consulting’s Katherine Hunt told ifa why she believes the advice profession is the “number one winner” of the QAR and how it promises to walk back what she describes as “government overreach”.

February was a real flurry of activity for the advice profession, so it’s no surprise that one of the most popular episodes of 2023 takes place right in the midst of it.

In this episode of the ifa show, pre-merger FPA chief executive Sarah Abood discussed the final report of the QAR the week after it was published. She shared her overall perspective of Michelle Levy’s recommendations and why radical change is required and what it entails.

2. ‘The pendulum of change is swinging in favour of advisers’

Securing the second highest spot among the top podcasts in 2023, Eugene Ardino, CEO of Lifespan Financial Planning, made a notable appearance in one of the first episodes of the year.

Mr Ardino gave his overview of some of the key recommendations made by Michelle Levy in the QAR, and detailed why he believes it will take at least a couple of years for some of the reforms resulting from the review to be implemented.

The podcast that got the most advisers listening for 2023, perhaps unsurprisingly, was centred around exactly how the QAR is set to benefit advisers.

Ahead of Minister Jones publicly releasing the final QAR in February, pre-merger AFA chief executive Phil Anderson sat down with ifa to relay some wise words for those who have been most vocal in their opposition to the QAR.

“The Quality of Advice Review is the only game in town at the moment. This is the only way we are going to fix the problem that we all appreciate is in financial advice,” he warned.
